More than 1,000 racist attacks took place in France last year, one third of which targeted Muslims, who make only about 10 percent of the country's population, media reports say.

(ABNA.IR) - Middle East Affairs Consultant Khalil Brahim said that Muslims are the target of frequent attacks in Europe, especially in France, due to the spread of Islamophobia.

Last week, 36 Muslim graves were vandalized in Strasburg. There has also been a report of the desecration of a mosque.

The incidents take place in a country which is home to Western Europe's largest Muslim community.

"I think France is a country of freedom and human right and we have to conserve this image in the world," said Xavier Compagnon, a retired pilot.

"There are stupid people…we don't know the reality of their problem. They make confusion between extremists and normal people,” he added.

Moussa Khedimellah, a sociologist said, "This kind of tension, this kind of fear is totally not logical and not based on true facts because today we know that Muslims are integrated in all parts of France."

The government can not be expected to stop all xenophobic extremists but the Muslims do want assurances that their places of worship are safe.
